Questions venue owners ask us
What does a hospitality accountant do?
We look after the bookkeeping, payroll and award compliance, BAS, tax, payroll tax and reporting for cafés, restaurants, bars and hospitality groups. Because hospitality is all we do, we already understand rosters, penalty rates, food cost and the cash that moves through a venue every day.
When is super due under Payday Super?
From 1 July 2026, super is paid each payday instead of quarterly. The ATO says contributions "must be received by your employees' super funds within 7 business days after paying your employees", with some exceptions, such as for new employees. The super guarantee rate is still 12%.

Which award covers my café or restaurant?
It depends on how the venue trades. Fair Work says the Restaurant Award "covers cafés that mainly prepare and sell food and drinks for customers to consume on the premises". Cafés that mostly sell takeaway or trade in a food court fall under the Fast Food Award, and cafés run by hotels or resorts fall under the Hospitality Award. We check coverage against your actual sales mix before setting up payroll.

Does my business have to pay payroll tax?
Payroll tax is a state and territory tax, so it depends on where you pay wages and how much you pay across Australia. In NSW for 2026–27, the rate is 5.45% on wages above a $1.2 million yearly threshold, and related businesses can be grouped so they share one threshold. Our payroll tax calculator covers every state and territory.

When does my venue need to register for GST?
The ATO says you must register when your business has a GST turnover "of $75,000 or more", or when you start a new business and expect to reach that amount in the first year. "Once you are required to register for GST, you need to do so within 21 days." You need an ABN before you can register.
